‘Ball of the Century’ exactly 22 years later, Recereated by Devendra Bishoo

West Indian leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo snared the prized moment playing against Australia in the first Test Match when he got the wicket of batsman Brad Haddin. Bishoo soon became the talked about cricketer for his wicket-taking delivery reminded of the magical ball bowled by spin wizard Shane Warne, a 22 years ago. The ‘Gatting ball’ went down in cricketing folklore as the ‘Ball of the Century’ and it had to be a momentous occasion where West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo spun a web. It was on the exact day, 22 years ago that Shane Warne had bowled former England captain Mike Gatting around his legs.

West Indies public were left deflated in the first Test against Australia when Mitchell Johnson and co ran the home side out for a cheap 148. On day two though, it was a different story altogether as Devendra Bishoo led West Indies’s charge, getting wickets at regular intervals and keeping Australia on the backfoot while Adam Voges is playing a fighting knock on debut.

Bishoo’s wizardry delivery pitched on leg-stump and breached Brad Haddin’s defence and hit the top of the off-stump. The Australian wicket-keeper could scarcely believe what had had just happened around him while Bishoo was totally blaze after the fall of the wicket, unfazed by his own brilliance. Bishoo’s wickets have given the Windies a fighting chance in the Test match but this is truly spectacular and is worth discussing as the ‘ball of recent times’ at the bare minimum.
