Recently at the National Astronomy Meeting held in Wales, a mathematics professor from UK’s Northumbria University made some interesting remarks claiming that the sun’s activity will decrease up to 60% by the year 2030.
Valentina Zharkova’s report is based on a new forecasting model that studies the solar cycle based on the dynamo effects on the sun’s two layers. The professor says that the prediction has an accuracy of 97%.
According to Zharkova, “We found magnetic wave components appearing in pairs, originating in two different layers in the Sun’s interior. They both have a frequency of approximately 11 years, although this frequency is slightly different, and they are offset in time.”
The magnetic wave patterns tell us that there would be two upcoming 11-year heartbeats from the sun. Cycle 25 is expected to happen in 2022 and Cycle 26 is expected to occur from 2030 to 2040.
“In cycle 26, the two waves exactly mirror each other – peaking at the same time but in opposite hemispheres of the Sun,” Zharkova adds. Their interaction will be disruptive, or they will nearly cancel each other. We predict that this will lead to the properties of a ‘Maunder minimum.’
If these theories prove to be true, it means we will be experiencing a ‘mini ice age’ due to lower solar activity.
In case you are unaware about it, Zharkova is referring to the Maunder Minimum, the last recorded mini ice age, which took place from 1645 to 1715. During these years of cold winter, the River Thames of England was frozen.
